Klitgaarden artist grants
Apply for an artist grant
Klitgaarden Refugium offers several artist grants each year, allowing professional artists to spend two weeks working in a peaceful, reflective, and inspiring environment. The grants cover all living expenses, including three daily meals prepared on-site using local ingredients. Artists will have access to shared facilities and the opportunity to work in one of the retreat's three studios. A small personal payment of DKK 200 per day is required.
The grants are awarded based on applications assessed by a grant committee established by the Klitgaarden Foundation in collaboration with the Council of Danish Artists. The grant committee consists of three members appointed by the board, which is replaced periodically.
These grants are open to recognised artists in all art forms, including visual arts, literature, music, and performing arts. To be eligible, applicants must be members of one of the Council of Danish Artists' member organisations with the name of the artist organization or be able to demonstrate a similar artistic background.
Furthermore, please state whether you have previously had a scholarship stay at Klitgaarden and if so, when. You cannot receive the scholarship if you have had a similar stay at Klitgaarden within the past two years.
Applicants will receive a response no later than eight weeks after the deadline.
If you are awarded one of the Klitgaarden Foundation's artist grants, you have one year to complete your stay. After that, the grant will be considered obsolete.
If you have not been considered for an artist grant, an alternative is to apply for funding for a work stay yourself or to pay from your own funds. See here
The next application deadline is September 30, 2026.
An application must always be sent as a single PDF file of a maximum of five standard pages in total.
The application must include:

Studio
The King's former garages, located a stone's throw from the main building, now accommodates three separate studios. Each studio features a kitchenette, a toilet, skylights, and French doors that open onto rosehip bushes, allowing the sound of the sea to filter in. Each studio is approximately 50 m² in size. Two of the studios are equipped with specialised facilities for graphics and ceramics, while all three are versatile and functional spaces suitable for all types of practitioners.
The graphics workshop is designed as a "non-toxic" environment, equipped for professional printed graphics work, including gravure printing, photopolymer engraving, and letterpress printing.
The facilities include:
- A ferric chloride etching vessel (vertical design for copper)
- Ferric chloride etching vessel (vertical design for copper)
- A UV lighting cabinet with a vacuum frame for photopolymer work
- An airbrush cabinet for aquatint techniques
- A heating cabinet for finishing plates
The ceramic studio holds an electric turntable and a 100-litre ceramic kiln. It allows artists to experiment with ideas, sketch out concepts, and create minor works or material tests during their stay.
Artists bring their own materials and tools. It is expected that the workshop is used with consideration for equipment and surroundings. For questions about the workshops, contact the artist and board member. Bjarne Werner Sorensen.
