The story of Klitgaarden
The royal Danish family's holiday home, Klitgaarden, was built in 1914 by King Christian X as a private residence for the royal family. The architecture and interior have been meticulously preserved and remain unchanged since architect Ulrik Plesner designed the house. The architectural style of Klitgaarden strikes a balance between grandeur and understated simplicity. The interior draws inspiration from the English Arts & Crafts movement, emphasising quality materials and visible craftsmanship.
Klitgaarden Foundation
In 2000, Klitgaarden was given a new lease of life as a refuge – a new beginning for the historic house, which was transformed into the Klitgaarden Foundation. The refuge is based on an open and respectful interaction between artists and researchers – often with connections to universities, higher education institutions and the Danish Artists' Council.
“Work flows much better when you are here; your shoulders are relaxed, your eyes are wide open, and your thoughts are adjusted.”
- User, Guestbook
The atmosphere at Klitgaarden
At Klitgaarden, each room has a unique name, such as 'Crown Prince,' 'Jeweller,' and 'Church.' Several guests return and request their favourite room, reflecting their attachment to it. The dining room serves as the heart of the retreat, where meals become more than just a break from work; they foster stimulating conversations and social interactions.
