The Klitgaarden
Foundation
The Royal Villa as a Retreat
In 2000, Klitgaarden was revitalised as a retreat, marking a new chapter for the historic house. When the heirs of the royal family decided to put Klitgaarden up for sale, the idea emerged to create an institution dedicated to art and science. This vision came to life, and the house underwent careful restoration and adaptation to serve its new purpose. One of the significant changes included converting the former royal garages into studios that blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
The goal of the Klitgaarden Foundation was to own and operate Klitgaarden as a retreat for researchers, artists, and others seeking tranquillity to focus on their work. The retreat fosters open and respectful interaction between artists, researchers, and the rich history, culture, and nature of Skagen. The visiting artists and researchers often affiliate with universities, higher education institutions, and the Danish Artists' Council.
Twenty-five years after its opening, it is evident that this vision has become a reality. What began as an ambitious idea has transformed into a recognised and sought-after retreat located at the northernmost tip of Denmark. Many individuals return, and new visitors continue to discover this unique place, where the expansive sky invites professional immersion, free from everyday distractions. This transformation from concept to reality was made possible through the generous support of various public and private foundations.
Today, Klitgaarden is a vibrant retreat where artistic and scientific processes thrive amidst the beauty of the sea, dunes, and sky. The renovation planned for 2025 will honour the original architecture and colour scheme of the house, ensuring that Klitgaarden remains a dynamic space and a professional community for many years to come.
