Klitgaarden Refugium, Christian X's old royal residence in Skagen, has received generous donations for an extensive renovation.
When architect Ulrik Plesner's original royal residence, Klitgaarden, closed its activities for six months this spring, there was a good and happy reason for it.
– We have received very generous support from a number of contributors, so it is now possible to initiate a major renovation of Klitgaarden, says Lars Hvilsted Rasmussen, chairman of the Klitgaarden Foundation.
The restoration project is supported by Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen's Foundation, AP Møller and Wife Chastine McKinney Møller's Foundation for General Purposes, the Augustinus Foundation, the philanthropic association Realdania, the Obelske Family Foundation, the Spar Nord Foundation, the Sportgoods Foundation and the Danish Agency for Palaces and Culture. A good DKK 13.5 million has been donated for the restoration.

The beautiful old property in Skagen today functions as a refuge and provides peace of mind for artists, researchers, writers and others who need focused time to work on a project. But age and the sometimes harsh Danish climate have left their mark on the building.
Klitgaarden was built in 1914 by the then King Christian X as a private holiday home and formed the setting for the royal family's holidays until 1952. Later, Hereditary Prince Knud and Princess Caroline Mathilde took over the place, and Klitgaarden remained in the family's ownership until the summer of 1997, when the heirs sold the property to the Klitgaarden Foundation. After a careful restoration, Klitgaarden opened its doors as a refuge in the year 2000.
The renovation project will be carried out in the spring and summer and will mean that the refuge will be closed to guests in the spring and summer of 2025, but will reopen on November 3. After the renovation, it will also be possible to take a guided tour of Klitgaarden again.
